Lecture Series
In association with Cork City Libraries, GFP has initiated the Vernon Mount Lecture Series, taking place in Douglas Library on a biannual basis. The series has been formulated for the express purpose of informing the general public of the uniqueness of Vernon Mount House, and its historical importance in both a national and international context, with a view to ensuring its conservation and sustainable renewal as a key feature in the major public park proposed for the Tramore Valley on the south side of Cork city.
The inaugural lecture took place on 22 August 2013, as part of a programme of events held during National Heritage Week. Mr David Bosonnet, landscape architect and partner in Brady Shipman Martin who authored the Tramore Valley Plan, spoke on 'Conservation and Vernon Mount House-Can the twain meet?' Mr Bosonnet outlined the proposals contained in the plan as well as the particular issues relating to Vernon Mount House.
The second lecture in the series titled 'Art in Cork's Big Houses-Vernon Mount an exceptional rarity', was held on 2 April 2014, and was given by Peter Murray, Director of The Crawford Gallery. Mr Murray delivered an absorbing and highly entertaining dissertation on the artworks and architecture of the Big Houses in and around Cork.
